Marka Privacy Policy
Last updated: 17 September 2026
Marka is a reading tracker made by Quitehill Studio ("we", "us"). This policy explains what happens to your information when you use Marka on iPhone, iPad and its widgets.
In short: Marka has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Your library stays on your device and in your own iCloud account. To look up book details, Marka sends only the search term, ISBN or book ID you enter to our lookup service, with nothing that identifies you.
Data stored on your device and in your iCloud
Your library, reading sessions, notes, quotes, goals, bookcase and settings are stored on your device. If iCloud is turned on, Apple syncs them through your own private iCloud database so they appear on your other devices. We cannot see or access this data. Apple's handling of iCloud data is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy.
Data sent to our book lookup service
To find book details, Marka connects to a lookup service run by us. It receives only:
- search terms you type into book search, and ISBNs you scan or enter
- the catalogue ID of a book you add from search results, which we use to keep an anonymous list of books readers have added
- author or genre signals used to suggest books (never your whole library)
- titles, authors or ISBNs from a file you import from Goodreads or StoryGraph, so missing details can be filled in (the file itself is not uploaded)
These requests contain no account, name, email, device identifier, or contents of your library. Our service does not log IP addresses or user agents and sets no cookies.
To answer a request, our service asks public book catalogues, Google Books and Open Library. It sends them the query, not anything about you. Answers are cached briefly to keep the service fast: search results for up to 1 day and catalogue responses for up to 30 days. Details of books that readers add are kept in our book catalogue, which is hosted by Algolia. That catalogue contains book information only, never who added a book.
Book cover images
Cover images in search results load directly from Open Library, Google and Apple servers. As with any image loaded from the internet, those servers can see your IP address when your device requests an image. Their own privacy policies apply.
Camera and photos
- Camera: used only to scan barcodes, photograph a book cover, or scan text from a page. Scanning happens on your device, and nothing is recorded or uploaded.
- Photo library: Marka only adds the reading cards you choose to save. It never reads your photos.
Sharing
When you share a card to Instagram Stories or through the share sheet, the image goes to the app you pick. What happens next is governed by that app's privacy policy.
Feedback email
If you send us feedback, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to include. We use it only to reply and improve Marka, and we delete it when it is no longer needed.
What we don't do
- No sign-up or account
- No advertising, analytics or third-party tracking SDKs
- No selling or sharing of personal data
Children
Marka does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Your choices
You can delete any book, note or session in the app, or delete the app to remove its data from your device. To remove data synced to iCloud, go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage on your device. Lookup requests aren't linked to you, so we can't find or return them for a specific person.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top.
